Aveiro

City of Aveiro

Aveiro has a population of about 78,000 and is home to the headquarters of the Baixo Vouga Region (NUTIII) that comprises almost 400,000 inhabitants in eleven municipalities. Aveiro is surrounded by salt-flats, beaches and lagoons and the city centre is crisscrossed by water canals. It is strategically located between the two main metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, makes up one end of the Aveiro-Madrid axis, and is easily accessible due to the railway and road infrastructures. Its port has also a significant impact on regional economic and social development.

The city’s main industries are ceramics, and software development, and it plays an important role as the R&D centre for the former national telecom monopoly. The founding of the University of Aveiro, directly connected with this R&D centre, has played an important role in the social and economic development of our region. Though young, the university and the growing economy of the region have been changing Aveiro significantly.

University of Aveiro

Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro (UAVR) quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, it continues to develop and implement its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and promote cooperation with society. Attended by about 15,000 students on undergraduate and postgraduate programs, UAVR has achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its staff.
UAVR has many years of experience in cooperation with companies, through the participation in national and European R&D projects in Consortium with companies, or through the provision of R&D services to national and international companies. Since its beginning, UAVR has been longing to cooperate with companies and has a very open attitude towards cooperation with society. This experience is well illustrated by the 59 national R&D projects in consortium with firms (ca. 11 million euro) and by the more than 200 cooperation projects with SMEs held during the period 2008-2014. In addition, the UAVR has developed sound research on the role higher education can play in fostering socio-economic development, giving rise to a significant knowledge base on a variety of relevant domains, from regional innovation systems to triple helix arrangements and entrepreneurship promotion.
