A new guide has been published based on the findings of a pilot study led by Professor Lee Elliot Major and Dr Anne-Marie Sim, from the Centre for Social Mobility at the University of Exeter. The proof-of-concept pilot involved undergraduates providing tutoring in literacy, as part of their own university courses, to a group of 13 year old school children. Assessments showed that the children's writing skills had dramatically improved, after just nine weeks of tutoring.

The study clearly demonstrated the value of small group, university-led tutoring, highlighting the wider benefits for the children, the students, and the university. Universities are perfectly placed to develop this kind of support for schools in their area, supporting greater social mobility as well as building lasting relationships and giving something back to the communities in which they’re located.

The new guide provides practical information for other universities to consider when thinking about designing their own tutoring programmes.
