Since October 2024, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg has been offering a bilingual Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science (BiBa) - the first of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt.

As part of the programme, students also complete language training in German or English. The aim of the study programme, which is unique in the state, is to train computer scientists who are aiming for a career in multinational teams in the regional economy of Saxony-Anhalt after completing their studies.

Rector of the University, Prof Dr Jens Strackeljan said ‘The University of Magdeburg would like to offer international graduates more opportunities to start their professional careers with companies in the region in the future. We know that sufficient language skills and intercultural competences are key aspects of this. If successful, this model will also serve as an example for other study programmes at the University of Magdeburg and is a component of the recently adopted internationalisation strategy.

The bilingual Bachelor’s degree programme is divided into two so-called tracks – German and English – and requires very good language skills in each. Students on the German track are typically native German speakers; from the first semester onwards, they hear their computer science content in German and receive lessons in ‘Scientific English’. The English track is designed for international students who have a good command of English but cannot yet speak sufficient German to complete the programme in German. They receive German lessons in the first two years of the programme.

The language course in ‘Scientific English’ extends over four semesters and is attended by all students on the course, which gives participants from both tracks the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange ideas at an early stage. Additional events promote joint activities. By the 5th semester at the latest, both groups take part in events together, which are held either in English or German.
