Exeter recently took part in the 2024 Futures Festival which aims to showcase the innovative research being carried out by universities across the South West of England.

For two days each autumn since 2018, the FUTURES: A Festival of Discovery  has been an opportunity for the public to discover more about the research that’s shaping our future, from researchers across the South West region’s universities. The annual event is a public engagement collaboration between the University of Bath, Bath Spa University, the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth.

With something for every age, FUTURES brings science, culture and research to life in new and exciting ways. At the recent festival, there were plenty of events to experience, including late-night museum openings, hands-on activities, exhibitions, storytelling, comedy nights, talks, quizzes, radio shows and much more!

Examples included the ‘Pop Up Curiosity Shop’, in Exeter city centre which featured activities like the ‘Killer Fungus Interactive Event’ that attracted more than 600 visitors over the two days, and a Climate Change and Gardening panel at St. Mary’s Church in the nearby town of Totnes, which attracted an audience of over 250 people.

A special feature over the two days also involved the launch of the ‘We Still have a Chance’ legacy mural. The mural, which is located near Exeter Library, was on display to some 2500 visitors during the festival weekend.
