The opening session, chaired by Chris Evans, Director of Exeter Innovation, included a keynote speech on How AI is Radically Changing the Way We do Business, by Professor Mark Thompson, AI and Digital Technology, at the University of Exeter. Mark is a leading light in the digital space and is acknowledged as one of the architects of digital service redesign within the UK public sector. He blends the roles of academic, practitioner, and policy commentator and is a regular voice in the media, as well as chairing key national conferences.
Professor Thompson was followed by Andrew Proctor, Executive Lead for UK Education at Amazon Web Services. As a Professor of Digital Transformation, he spoke about the lessons learned in digital transformation for the public and private sectors. The session also explored the practical tools already available, including platforms like ChatGPT, and how these can be used to drive innovation and improve productivity.
The second session focussed on Regional Opportunities and Business Exemplars, and was chaired by the Devon and Exeter Chamber of Commerce. It featured a number of presentations from leaders of companies that provide AI consultancy and who develop solutions for SMEs using AI. The final session focussed on AI Skills and Workforce.
Chaired by Devon County Council’s lead for Employment and Skills, it involved an expert panel looking at how AI can supercharge businesses and careers, including perspectives from a local social enterprise that works to empower businesses and individuals through technology. The session explored how to build the skills, confidence, and capacity to embrace AI in the workplace, now and in the future, together with valuable insights into how to equip today’s workforce for tomorrow’s challenges.
Bringing together thought leaders from across industry, academia, and policy, the Summit explored the role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping the future of business, innovation, and society. All the speakers brought fantastic energy, ideas, and real-world examples of how AI is already driving change across the southwest region, from creative industries to construction. It was a great reminder of the strength and potential of a local AI ecosystem working together across all areas of life in the region. Encouraging others to seize the moment, Kevin Bath from flomoco (a southwest-based IT company) stated: “AI is reshaping industries and roles. While some positions may evolve, significant opportunities await those ready to adapt. The future belongs to those who embrace this change proactively.”
The summit was well-received and the University is now looking to organise similar events in other parts of the region over the coming months.
